Young Republicans of Texas Prevail: TYRF’s Lawsuit Dismissed With Prejudice

Young Republicans of Texas statement on the Texas Court of Appeals dismissing the TYRF lawsuit with prejudice

Opponents of our organization spent three years trying to sue us “to death” with a frivolous lawsuit. All of TYRF’s claims, including that they own the rights to our name, were thrown out with prejudice by the Court of Appeals. The Young Republicans of Texas are here to stay. Our full statement follows.

In the fall of 2023, the Texas Young Republican Federation (TYRF) splintered from partner status with the Republican Party of Texas over petty interpersonal drama. We formed the new Young Republicans of Texas coalition to build a strong youth auxiliary and cultivate a positive partnership with the Party. Leaders of the embittered former partner considered our nascent organization a threat and attempted to strangle us in our cradle. Chief among the underhanded tactics TYRF employed was a frivolous lawsuit which was finally dismissed on all counts this week.

TYRF sought to abuse the legal system to, in their own words, sue us “to death” and get us “in the gutter of the Justice system.” To ensure that the process would punish us, they sued our members in their personal capacities along with the organization itself, threatening their financial wellbeing. We’re glad that the Court saw through this farce and dismissed all the claims with prejudice.

We’re incredibly grateful to Tony McDonald and Connor Ellington for standing up for our rights and defeating this malicious lawsuit, and we look forward to the recovery of legal fees as ordered by the Court for all the work that went into this successful defense.

YRT is here to stay, and we’re eager to move on from this needlessly ugly episode. Since partnering with the Texas GOP, we’ve expanded to over 20 chapters, advocated strongly on issues affecting young Texans, and recently rallied Republican leaders and candidates at our Patriot Hour RPT Convention social. We look forward to doing our part in November and continuing to take our organization, party, and state to new heights. Onward.

From the record: TYRF’s own leaders, in their own words. Their Policy Director wrote “SUE THEM TO DEATH!!!!!” and their Treasurer urged suing YRT members “in their personal capacities” to get them “in the gutter of the Justice system.” The Court of Appeals dismissed every claim with prejudice.
